Oakwood School Families,

It has been SO wonderful to see so many of you back inside our school visiting your child’s classroom and meeting with their teacher for conferences!!  I’m sure you noticed we have made some wonderful changes over the last year and a half!  Mostly to our school media center- it has received an almost complete makeover!!  New carpeting, furniture, and a new layout!!  For those of you who did not get a chance to check it out, you will be able to see it when you attend our family night during the Scholastic Book Fair.  Thursday, Dec. 2nd, we will be inviting you back inside again to shop the fair- so save that date.

These next couple of months here at Oakwood, will continue to be busy as we continue to help all our students learn and grow.  We will be reading, writing, and problem solving all throughout the day.

We will also be continuing our implementation of the use of Conscious Discipline.  These next two months, we will be placing our focus on the skill of Encouragement and the power of unity.   The power of unity helps us to come to the realization that we are “all in this together!”   We have been establishing this sense of unity in the creation of our school families- with classroom jobs, team building activities, school family agreements, etc..

Next step is to focus on the skill of Encouragement.  We do this by ensuring that our Noticing Centers are established and working well in our classrooms/school.  A Noticing Center, sometimes called the Kindness Center, helps everyone in the school family focus on helpful acts or acts of kindness in the classroom.  Rather than “tattling” on or paying attention to things we don’t want to happen, we highlight the good!  This helps increase the values of interdependence, optimism, and gratitude.  What wonderful things to increase in our students and our world!!

I am very excited to share a celebration with you.  I will be attending Conscious Discipline level 2 training in Texas next week. This training is by invitation only, so I feel very honored to represent not only Oakwood, but the Oshkosh Area School District as I go to further my learning.  I look forward to sharing that learning with the Oakwood School Family and District.

You can learn more about Conscious Discipline online at their website. https://consciousdiscipline.com/free-resources/free-for-all/.  They have many resources including ways you can add these structures at home.

From all of us here in the Oakwood School Family, we wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving!!

And as always, we wish you well,

We had our first official meeting in October with our newly elected members.  Here are our Student Council members for the 2021-22 school year:  Amelia Wade, Addy Verwiel, Jacob Scheivert, Finley Beatty, Taylor VanBeek, Lily Campbell, Natalie Backus, Daisy Campbell, Graham Epprecht, Mila Marcellis, Aubree Marino, Cooper Becktold, AJ Blondheim, Eve Wade, Reese Wickham, Mya Doberstein, Edwin Connelly, James Zahner, Liam Bertram, Lizzie Draxler, Kenzie Reasons, Mason Clark, Liviana Notinokey, Aubrey Goyke, Claire Teviotdale, Avery Booms, Sophia Schinkten, Kezi Bougie, Aidan Arakkaveettil, Ella Piela, and Reid Szilagyi.   Congratulations to all of these students!

Our first activity of the year was participating in the Oshkosh West Homecoming Parade.  Our students dressed up in Wildcat blue or with the Masquerade theme of the parade.  We had lots of fun and even passed out some candy along the parade route.  Oakwood was awarded a $100 prize for our participation in the parade.  This money will go toward future projects we sponsor for our school.

We also held a fundraiser after making Boo lollipops for students to purchase for others.  We had a lot of fun with this activity.  We thank everyone for your support of our project that brought in $450.00 for future Oakwood student activities.

Here are some pictures from the West Homecoming Parade:

Cherith International

Cherith International would like to extend their gratitude for your generous support of new items for the new refugee arrivals coming to Oshkosh, in particular, those coming from Afghanistan. Their plight is beyond belief with many having minutes to pack up their belongings into one bag, if that, before escaping, and arriving at our bases with nothing, having to restart their lives that they had already built back home.

Jenny and Harry have been able to greet the first Afghan arrival to Oshkosh and supported them with some of your gifts.  Thank you again for your generosity. A letter of gratitude from Cherith International is attached

A message from Oakwood’s Technology Coach:

Are you interested in viewing your child’s digital work and communicating with your children’s classroom teachers?  This year, all K-12 students are using the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).  As a parent or guardian, you can pair with your child as a Canvas Observer!  Observers in Canvas can view digital classroom materials and follow progress in active classrooms.  An observer cannot change content, but may access classroom information! Grades are NOT found in Canvas for Elementary.  You will continue to view grades through Infinite Campus.

Monday, November 15th, you will be receiving a paper copy from your child’s classroom teacher with your child’s unique pairing code. You only need to pair ONE time as a Canvas observer and you will be able to view activity for every Canvas course that all your children are enrolled in for all of their Oshkosh career.  Pairing codes expire after 7 days.  Should this occur, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

How to Connect
If you already have a Canvas Parent Account for a middle school or high school child in Oshkosh, you simply need to use the pairing code provided by your child’s classroom teacher.   If you do not have a Canvas Parent Account yet, you should set up an account either on your web browser or on the Canvas Parent App (or both) and then follow the instructions.

Canvas Parent App - Mobile Directions  LINK
The app is free in the Apple Store and on Google Play

Canvas Parent Access - Web Browser Directions - LINK
Visit the OASD district website, and click on “QUICKLINKS” and Canvas Portal. Click in the upper right hand corner to start an account.

Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher, or myself, should you have any questions.
