Happy November Oakwood Families,

   Conferences begin this week Thursday and then continue next week on Monday and Thursday. You should be all signed up and have received notification of when your meeting will be held.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to accommodate families that have multiple children as well as the rest of our school family.

    Conferences are a wonderful time to be updated on all the successes that your child(ren) have experienced already this year.  In addition you will be receiving information from assessments and data that teachers have been collecting.  Remember this is baseline data and is specifically used as a starting point for teachers to plan instruction.  In January and again at the end of the year this data will show your child(rens) growth.  Our goal is to have EVERY student make at least a year’s growth if not more.   I hope you enjoy your meetings and all the wonderful insights our teachers have about your child(ren).  

     We have received many questions regarding Home Connections/Math homework this year.        The purpose of homework is to provide purposeful, independent practice.  With that being said, your child(ren)’s teacher may send a specific Home Connection page or a different item for practice because it really hits a targeted concept that students need practice with. So, you might be asking- “How can I best support my child’s math development if there is not a nightly homework assignment?”  Great question, our goal for students and their families is to be talking about math and seeing themselves as mathematicians.  Bridges offers multiple options that we could be offering to our families.

• Bridges Math at Home - Problem solving tasks, would you rather?, online games, etc that are linked to grade levels

• WorkPlace games- Bridges offers many of the WorkPlaces digitally - ask your teacher how you can access these.

• We want our students to be seeing math in the world around them.  Challenge students to think about how they use math daily.

  • We are going to the grocery store and need to buy _____.  I have $5 (or whatever amount you would like to choose).  How many boxes of spaghetti can we buy?

  • We are going to make cookies but we want to double the recipe?  What do we need?

  • Where do you see numbers around you?  Speed limit signs, mile markers, etc. Where is one place you saw a number?  What was the number and what did it represent?

       In closing, at  the end of this month Thanksgiving is celebrated!!  This is a time when we reflect on all that we have and the gratitude we feel.   Here at Oakwood, we are grateful for all of you and your children.  We have the BEST jobs ever and enjoy spending time with your child(ren), watching them learn and grow.

If your child is going to be riding a different bus -they must present a note to the bus driver.   Please also let your child's teacher and the office know.

Student Council News for November

Our student Council is up and running and we held our first meeting in October. We have 43 members. Here are the students who are in student council this year:

For our first service activity of the year, members are helping out in the lunchroom to assist with younger students and to help keep our cafeteria clean. Students are given the opportunity to sign up to help during their recess time or after they finish eating their own lunch. This is a great opportunity for us to show pride in our school by being role models for younger students and to help clean up and make our school look nice! 

 

We will be working on a project in November to make holiday decorations and ornaments for trees at Brighton Acres for their annual Christmas Village Craft Fair. To go along with our Sheldon Nature theme we will be making decorations for a winter forest wonderland. More pictures to come next month to showcase our project. 

 

Join friends, family and staff of Oakwood Elementary School for a fun night out with the Wisconsin Herd!!

A portion of the ticket sales will be donated back to the PTO AND BRAND NEW custom designed Herd x Oakwood t-shirts will be offered this year that can be ordered to wear to show our Oakwood Pride and support the Herd! A portion of the t-shirt sales will also be donated back to the PTO!!

More details to come about ticket and t-shirt sales!

 

Order your tickets now for our first Oakwood Herd Night on Saturday, November 18. This is a fundraiser for our school. A portion of all tickets is donated back to our Oakwood PTO which supports future activities at our school. It should be a fun night for our Oakwood families. The link allows you to choose your own seats. If you would like to sit with other families you are able to purchase seats close to each other. Herdup!
