Oakwood School Families,

 

As we now get ready to begin a new month and are fully engaged in the 2023-24 school year, it is amazing to see the learning and growth that has happened already.

• Students have learned procedures in their classrooms for how to do just about EVERYTHING!  Anchor charts with visuals have been created to help remind and promote consistency.  The brain is pattern-forming and when students know what is expected it helps relieve anxiety and stress.

• Students are reading like crazy.  They are checking books out from our school media center as well as their classroom libraries.  We just recently ordered take-home book bags for our K-2 students.  Once these arrive, students in these grades will be bringing books home at night to read with you as they work to become better readers.  Students in grades 3-5 should be bringing home their independent reading choices and will soon have book club books as well.  The MORE we read - the better we become!!

• We have also started the beginning of the year assessment process.  These assessments help us know exactly where your students are and how to plan instruction for them.  Information about these baseline assessments will be sent home to you soon.

 

Our new office is open and beautiful!  We are making the transitions to all our new drop off and pick up procedures.  Doing something new always has a period of adjustments.

Please be mindful when dropping your students off in the morning.  Car pool supervision does not start until 7:30 - this is because our staff do not start working until then.  We do have a few staff that have had hours adjusted to supervise our early bus dismissal but there are not enough of them to keep all of our students safe.  Thank you for understanding.

In addition, it is very helpful if your children can get in and out of the car on the right hand side.  Teaching them how to unbuckle also keeps the line moving.  With our new parking lot you can pull around and exit if the car in front is taking a little longer. Be sure to allow yourself space in order to get around.

The Oshkosh Area School District conducts a criminal background check on any individual who volunteers to work in the schools or on any school sponsored activity (Board Policy po8120).

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION PROCESS

Thank you for your interest in volunteering within the Oshkosh Area School District. Please
complete an online application by visiting the Oshkosh Area School District’s Human Resources
webpage at: https://www.oshkosh.k12.wi.us/district/human-resources
The classroom teacher will determine and notify you if you are chosen to volunteer. If chosen to
volunteer, please complete the volunteer application. Once you complete the application, please
notify the school office that your application is complete. *Your application will be processed
upon request of the school office*
The information you provide will be kept confidential. It is the policy of the Oshkosh Area
School District to require all volunteers to complete a Criminal Background Check
Authorization every school year. The Oshkosh Area School District will complete all
necessary background checks. A record of arrest or conviction does not automatically
prohibit volunteer service.

 

 

 

Now that our new office is open, if you need to pick your child up early or drop them off late, please use the new main entrance at Door #6.  If your child is going to be absent for the day, please notify the office at 920-424-0315.  

If your child is going to take a different bus home with a friend, please notify your child's teacher AND call Kobussen Bus at 920-424-7575.  

Reminder for birthday celebrations- Students are not allowed to bring treats, per the district snack policy. Students will celebrate their birthday with their classmates and teacher by singing, playing a short game, and/or discussing birthday highlights.

Come to Culver's on Westowne Ave in Oshkosh from 4:30-7:30 on October 11th and pick up your dinner in the drive thru or dine in with all your favorite Oakwood friends!  Mention that you're with Oakwood and Culver's will donate 10% back to the Oakwood PTO!

Join friends, family and staff of Oakwood Elementary School for a fun night out with the Wisconsin Herd!!

A portion of the ticket sales will be donated back to the PTO AND BRAND NEW custom designed Herd x Oakwood t-shirts will be offered this year that can be ordered to wear to show our Oakwood Pride and support the Herd! A portion of the t-shirt sales will also be donated back to the PTO!!

Order your tickets now for our first Oakwood Herd Night on Saturday, November 18. This is a fundraiser for our school. A portion of all tickets is donated back to our Oakwood PTO which supports future activities at our school. It should be a fun night for our Oakwood families. The link allows you to choose your own seats. If you would like to sit with other families you are able to purchase seats close to each other. Herdup!

Students in 2nd through 5th grade will have an opportunity to participate in the Herd Art Contest.  Students who wish to participate will be bringing home a cheer board and directions for the contest.  Any student who returns their artwork should bring it to the office to be stored until it is retrieved by a Herd representative.  All entries are due October 20th.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Student Council

All 4th and 5th grade students were given the opportunity to join our Student Council. They wrote a speech to share with their classroom stating reasons why they would like to join and what qualities they have that will make them a strong candidate for representing our school. We will hold meetings at lunch time and other times of the school day. We look forward to working on projects to benefit our school family and to support our surrounding community. 

 

Walking School Bus

Oakwood started a Walking School Bus at the start of the school year. This is an opportunity for students to walk safely together to get to school in the morning. The number of students participating has already grown and we hope that more students will join our group. Students will walk on good weather days from now until we start having winter-like conditions. We will then resume again in the spring when warmer weather and safe walking conditions return. Some pictures of our Walking School Bus and a map of the area is included. If you would like more information about it or if you would like your child to participate please contact Mrs. Kroll.
