Student hours for 2022-2023 are 7:45-2:45. If students arrive in the classroom after 7:45-7:55 they are marked tardy.
-
In an effort to provide safety and security, the doors remained locked before, during and after the school day.
-
Breakfast will be served in the classroom. We will NOT have early arrival time for breakfast.
-
Lunch and Recess begin for K/1 at 11:00 AM and runs until 12:25 PM with students eating and then being released to recess upon completion. Grades 2/3 enter the cafeteria at 11:20 AM and 4/5 at 11:40 AM.

Parents are welcome at school for volunteering and to eat lunch or join in on recess. You must come through door #1 (ramp) and present your license in order to get your name badge. If you are picking up your child or dropping off something, for safety reasons, we are asking that you remain outside. We will send your child out or come to the door to gather what you are bringing.
Oakwood School Families,
HOORAY and WELCOME to the 2022-23 school year!! We are so thrilled to back in school and have your child(ren) in our care. Oakwood is known for its long tradition of academic excellence and strong partnerships with the community and our families. As our school sign says “the Pride’s Inside!” The staff at Oakwood is committed to building positive relationships with students and their families. We believe that without significant relationships no real learning can occur! We believe that we are all needed, and valued contributors, these connections that we have with others are the foundation of building the sense of family that we aim to create at Oakwood Elementary. Together we believe all students have the ability to learn, grow, and succeed." We really mean it; we have been spending these first few days getting to know each child well and building a strong relationship.
Linked here is our school family handbook. It is lengthy but will tell you everything you need to know about Oakwood. Our partnerships with parents and families is critical to our students success! After all, parents are a child’s first teacher. Families and visitor are always welcome at Oakwood. Feel free to come for lunch or volunteer in classrooms. Stop in at the office or call for more information.
My name is Susan L. Martin and I am the very proud Principal here at Oakwood. This is the beginning of my 10th year as an Elementary Principal, my 6th one here at Oakwood. Although I also attended Oakwood as a child and served as an Instructional Coach here too, so Oakwood definitely feels like home to me.
Summer is always a busy time with lots of building changes. We have a number of new staff in our building, and will be introducing them to you in our future school newsletters. In addition the Art Room has finally moved out the basement and is now located at the end of the hallway near the Oakwood Rd entrance. There are also brand new doors on all the rooms in the 3rd grade hallway. We also installed new permanent floors in our remaining entries. This upcoming Spring, construction will begin on the new secured entry and offices. These will also be located at the end of the hallway near the entrance on Oakwood Road.
I would like to elaborate on our morning procedures.
Morning Carpool drop off does not begin until 7:30 AM. This time is set because that is when teaching staff begin their day and there is supervision to ensure that students can get out of their cars and make it safely to the playground.
Bussed Students do arrive a bit earlier. There are a limited number of staff that arrive to get the students safely off the buses and out to the playground. At 7:30 AM, more staff arrive and head out to help supervise out on the playground as well.
There are almost 400 students here at Oakwood. In order to keep everyone safe we MUST have enough staff to supervise and watch the children.
So you have some choices. If you need your children to be at school earlier than 7:30 AM, you can have them ride the bus or you can enroll them in the YMCA morning care program. There is still plenty of space in that program.
Together, we CAN get all the children to and from school safely!!
Wishing you all well,
Susan L Martin - Principal
