Newsletter - February 2025

Dear Oakwood School Families,

We have made it to the halfway point!  Second semester has begun. We recently completed mid-year assessments and reports were mailed to you.  We are SO proud of the progress your children have been making!!  

Wisconsin Act 20 requires that children are assessed in the early reading skills of alphabet knowledge, letter sound knowledge, phonemic awareness, and decoding. These skills are assessed differently depending on the student’s grade level.   If your child fell below the 25% a personal reading plan has been created for them.  Meetings to discuss this plan are in progress and your child’s teacher will have reached out to you to set this meeting up.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out. 

Winter time can be difficult when it comes to finding things to do.  Did you know that playing board games has many benefits???  

Here are just a few:

1. Board games increase brain function.  This activity is a wonderful exercise for the brain.  Because playing stimulates brain areas that are responsible for complex thought and memory formation for both – kids and adults, it assists in practicing essential cognitive skills, such as problem solving and decision making.
2. It brings laughter and decreases stress.
3. Board game playing creates happiness.
4. It brings people closer and strengthens relationships.
5. One of the most amazing benefits of playing board games is that such traditional plays pull people out of the digital world.  Board games engage in activities that do not involve staring at a smartphone, tablet or computer screen.
6. It lowers blood pressures.
7. It teaches how to set goals and be patient.
8. Board games enhance creativity and  self confidence.

Seems like winning reasons to break out those games and spend some time as a family!

The application for ALPs (Advanced Learning Program) is open! ALPs is a unique program designed to serve self-motivated learners in Grades 4-8 located within Perry Tipler Middle School. The application is open through March 1st. Please submit if you are interested!

Join us! Learn About the OASD’s April 1 Referendum

The Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) is inviting families and community members to learn more about the upcoming $197.8 million capital referendum, designed to improve student safety and learning spaces while maintaining a $0 tax increase to the debt levy.

To ensure the community is well-informed, the OASD has scheduled a series of information sessions and Q&A opportunities. These events will give you a chance to ask questions and understand the full scope of the referendum projects. The district’s goal is to provide the community with the necessary facts to make an informed decision on April 1.

Information Sessions

Each session will include a presentation followed by a Q&A.

“We believe it’s crucial for every community member to have access to accurate and timely information about the future of our schools,” said Dr. Bryan Davis, OASD Superintendent. “These sessions provide a valuable opportunity for residents to hear directly from district leaders and get answers to their questions about the referendum.”

The district has been working closely with the community throughout its facilities planning process to ensure the referendum projects address the needs of students while maintaining fiscal responsibility. All residents are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming sessions and visit the website for more information.

 

 NexTrex Update 

Although our challenge has ended, we encourage everyone to continue their flexible plastic recycling.

Did you know that Festival Foods is a NexTrex partner? There is a bin conveniently located outside the front of the store for you to drop off your bags.

Can’t make it to Festival? We will still accept your bags at Oakwood however collection resources are limited.

 

This year’s Fang’s Reading Club will kick off on February 10th and run through March 7th.  There will be four one-week segments, with the reading goal of 20 minutes per day.  

Fang cut outs and baseball diamonds will be sent home with your child in early February and should be returned to their teacher no later than March 14th.  

Kids that complete the program will receive a complimentary ticket and hot dog and soda voucher, plus a grand slam prize which is a Timber Rattlers Baseball Hat.

Oakwood Family Night will be Friday, May 30th at 6:40.  If families are unable to attend, they can use the Reading Club Ticket and redeem their grand slam prize at any April/May 2025 game (excluding Opening Day and weekday day games) at the same value, or use it as a grass seat ticket for the remainder of the season.  

20% of tickets sold through the online school link will be donated back to Oakwood!
