Happy October!!

It is hard to believe that we are already one month into the 2024-25 school year.  The beginning of  this school year has been amazing and we are off to a great start.

Teaching and learning is well underway- our Kindergarten, 3rd grade and 5th grades are field testing the new CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts and Literacy) curriculum.    All K-5 classrooms are implementing the 3rd Edition of Bridges our math curriculum as well.   You should have received your child(rens) iReady results in grades 1-5.  This information is vital for us as we plan forward to ensure that ALL students grow and learn.  

Alongside all of that our classrooms are working on becoming school families.   The beginning of the year is a time when routines and procedures get put in place.  In the Conscious Discipline School Family model routines are made visual through the use of pictures.  These visuals show our children our expectations and what to do next.  The rationale behind this is that adults think in words but children think in pictures.  By using pictures to show children what to do, we provide consistency and help them understand our expectations more clearly.  Children must understand exactly what to do before they can do it.

Is there a time when you struggle with your child(ren), getting ready for school or getting ready for bedtime??  Consider making a routine by identifying the steps and adding visuals.  There are lots of examples online for your reference.

District Policy on cell phones:  

We encourage students to leave cell phones at home. If you need to reach your child or get a message to them please call the office at (920) 424-0315.  If your student brings a cell phone to school it must stay in their backpacks from the beginning of the day until the end of the day.  They may not access their phones until they have left the building.

 

 

Oakwood Families,

In the next coming months, the health office will be performing vision screenings on students in Kindergarten who were not screened or failed the screen in 4K, all of 2nd grade, and all of 4th grade.

Hearing screenings will be done with all kindergarteners with no documentation of a hearing screen or their most recent results suggested a referral. Hearing screenings will also be done on all 4th grade students.

If you wish to opt your child out of either of these screenings, please email the health office as soon as possible. Screenings will begin as soon as October.

All district-wide students should have a Walking Field Trip form on file as students may periodically leave school grounds to practice safety drills by walking to the fire station, etc.  This form can be filled out in the School Store in Infinite Campus.  

Please reach out to your child's teacher if you wish to volunteer in the classroom, on field trips, etc.  Volunteers need to complete a volunteer application.  NEW:  Background checks are now valid for 3 years.  If you are trying to complete a background check and are getting a message that the application is a duplicate, it is more than likely because you already have a valid background check on file.  If you have any questions on this please contact the Oakwood office at 920-424-0315.
